Mustang - The Mountain Desert in Nepal
Land beyond the Himalayas, Mustang is an excellent destination to visit in Nepal, which offers a lot to travelers.
Mustang, also popular as the Mountain Desert is a district located in the Northern part of Western Nepal. It covers an area of 3573 sq kms ranging from elevation of 2,010 meters to 8,167 meters. The district has multiple beautiful villages, religious places and the mesmerizing white Himalayas under the soaring blue sky. Most of the area of this region is the brown barren hills. That is what gave its name “The Mountain Desert”. Nowadays, the destination is popular for road trips and mountain biking.
There are peaks in the Mustang district that stand above the height of 6000 meters like Tukuche peak, Nilgiri South, Yakwakang Peak, and Damodar pass. Mustang is divided into Lower Mustang and Upper Mustang, which is significantly famous for trekking.
On your journey to the Lower Mustang, you’ll be witnessing Muktinath Temple, Kaligandaki Gorge (The deepest Gorge), Kagbeni village, and Apple Garden, to name a few significant places. And on your way to the Upper Mustang, you’ll be seeing Lo-Manthang, Caves, Chooser monastery, and Luri Gumba as well.
People and their Culture
Tibetan and Thakali people reside in Mustang so you will be seeing their local art and ancient history, with a unique culture. Ethnic groups of Loba and Barangaunle also live here. They are greatly influenced by Tibetan culture. People here follow Tibetan Buddhism and their main festivals are Losar, Tiji, Saka Lugka, and Duk Chu.

Mustang attracts a speeding number of tourists every year to experience the beauty that it exhibits. For example, The Sky Caves which are in10,000 of numbers into the sides of Mustang valley. These caves resemble sand castles which also reflects the forgotten civilization of the place. Not just that, you’d be on your way to see Marpha village, The Capital of Apple in Nepal and the World’s Deepest Gorge, The Kaligandaki Gorge.
Mustang is also incredibly famous for its religious values. So, people do not miss out on Muktinath Temple which is also believed to relieve you of your sins if you take a bath from the 108 stone taps. And then there is Lo Manthang which is a former Royal Palace and which has four incredibly famous temples.
